Ren'Py games usually arrive as a ZIP archive with an EXE launcher. The process is simple, but the order matters: verify the source, unpack to a normal folder, and only then run the launcher.

1. Start with the official source

Use the developer's page, Patreon, itch.io page or store listing. Avoid mirror sites that re-upload builds without permission: they are the most common source of bundled malware and outdated versions.

If a page offers a direct EXE but no project page, treat it as a red flag. A legitimate Ren'Py release almost always has a developer page, a version history and a way to contact the creator.

2. Check the file before you run it

Download the archive, not a random EXE from an ad. Compare the file name and size with the developer's release notes. If the page lists a SHA-256 hash, verify it before unpacking.

Run the file through a malware scanner and, if possible, a sandbox. A clean VirusTotal result is not a guarantee, but it catches many known samples.

3. Unpack to a normal folder

Create a folder such as `D:\Games\RenPy\GameName`. Avoid Program Files, OneDrive-synced folders and paths with unusual characters. Ren'Py writes saves and logs next to the game folder, and permission problems are a common cause of launch failures.

Use Windows Explorer or 7-Zip. Do not run the EXE directly from inside the ZIP: some games cannot create save files that way.

4. Run the launcher

Open the folder and run the game's EXE. If Windows SmartScreen appears, choose “More info” and verify the publisher before running. If the file is unsigned and you cannot confirm the source, stop.

For a first launch, use windowed mode. If the game crashes, check the `log.txt` or `traceback.txt` file in the game folder; it usually names the missing dependency or the failing script.

5. Update without losing saves

Before updating, copy the `game/saves` folder somewhere safe. Some developers change save formats between versions; keeping a backup lets you roll back.

Install the new build into a fresh folder, then copy your saves across. Do not overwrite the old folder until the new build launches correctly.

FAQ

Do Ren'Py games need Python installed?

No. The Windows build ships with its own runtime. You only need the game folder and the EXE.

Why does Windows block the EXE?

SmartScreen flags unsigned files. Verify the source and hash first; if you cannot, do not bypass the warning.

Where are the saves?

Usually in the `game/saves` folder inside the game directory. Some builds use the user profile; check the developer's notes.

Safety note. Use official sources, verify file hashes when available and scan unknown builds. This guide is informational and is not legal advice.
